Anyone recommend these as a first multimeter for a colleague, he's just starting out and is building a tool kit and asked me if they were any good?

I said that the price would probably make me a bit wary as they're available for around ÂŁ20 + and you do get what you pay for,

however with Schneider as the manufacturer, I would expect them to be half decent .

Just usual voltage, continuity, mA etc
he's only just starting out with control circuits so nothing too complicated

It got delivered today he brought it in and after having a go with it I said he should send it back ,the leads were very cheap and it just seemed like a cheap ÂŁ10 job dressed up in Schneiders name!

So he said he'd do that and get a fluke
1/2 hr later he's ordered a fluke 17B????
Not a model I'd heard of!
So we looked them up
Aparently these were made for the Chinese market and the 1 yr warranty is worthless outside of the country! !!!
I'm sure it works but I've advised him he'd be better off buying a European model! as they're not that different in price!

yes the 17b are made for china and an obsolete model they have been replaced by the 17b+

(dave at the eevblog on youtube reviewed and did a taredown vid of loads)

a second hand175 would be my choice as a cheap first meter

I suggested a 117
there not bad but again the guarantee isnt as good as the other dmm.

for example mine was unregistered when i got it so ive got 10year guarantee just on the lcd ^^

i got mine 179 for ÂŁ80 after money off vouchers (bidding came to around ÂŁ100)

they frequently sell for around ÂŁ100
