Went into the "new" screwfix that has just open near me as they are offering 10% off and I needed an armeg chisel which they were far cheaper than the wholesalers.

You've got various people, mainly elderly retired men accompanied by their wifes (think they'd just been shopping as Morrisons is opposite). Going in to the "Electrician and Plumbers" side because they wanted electrical items (included downlighters, sockets).

They were then being offered an Electrofix account "as we've just opened we can set up an Electrofix account and you'll get a discount". None of these gentlemen even mentioned being "in the trade" and were still given an account that Screwfix claims is for "approved" trades only.

I remember a year or so ago they were going to remove our electrofix account because they couldn't find us on the NIC's website, they eventually spelt our company name right and found us!

So if your not registered with a scheme and want screwfix best prices get down to a new store opening and they'll open you an account!!!

I only use Screwfix as a last resort!!

These outlets are desperate for business but allowing Joe Public to open accounts and get discounts smacks of desperation.

If Joe Public gets 10% I want at least 20%

They also have a gazebo in the car park with some guy selling special price Dewalts, trying to give it the hard sell.

You won't get a better drill than our Dewalt with 2.. Yes 2 1.5Ah Ni-Cad batteries..... What about my Metabo with 2 x 3ah Li-ion... I asked..... THIS ONES BETTER THAN THAT, IT'S DEWALT!!!

T'other day was in electrifx and and lad who worked for a contractor had gone into get some stuff, when at the till they wouldn't let him have the discount as he wasn't registered. They wouldn't even register him until he proved his quals etc. They mentioned needing JIB card, qual certs or scheme membership.

Don't know how ant OAP would get on though

Although there are no branches here I've got an electricfix account. Had to send everything off to them to prove I was a spark! Didn't find the prices to be worth the hassle though.

A builder/landlord I work for has also an account. **** knows how he got one though, I guess it just depends who you get in contact with on the other end of the phone.

I remember when Electrofix counter was to open I was told sorry you cannot join because you are not Part P or a scheme member When I reminded them they were in Scotland and advised them not to enforce English law in Scotland they took my details and then the head guy for Scotland phoned me on Monday morning to agree that I could join if I produced my SJIB and also could I email him a copy just to see what it looked like.

So handing out equipment to OAPs well thats not right plus I always use the click and go because I aint trailing their to find they dont have a certain part this has saved me a few bob in petrol and when I go in I get the "There,s your order have a nice day" when the bear of a plumber or spark is standing at the counter like a child with 50p to spend at the icecream van

The whole electrofix thing is about discount not safety or competence. You can buy 99% of the same items in Screwfix the only difference IS the discount.

A new store probably has a quoter on new electrofix accounts, so they're probably not bothered who they sign up they just need the numbers.

I thought I'd open an Electricfix account, just for the convenience of another place to call for stuff really. Anyway, filled in the online form (address and Elecsa approved contractor number) and sent it off. I got an email back from the saying "Thank you for applying to become an Electricfix member. We have received your application form that you submitted via the ************* website. Unfortunately based on the information you provided, we are unable to verify you as an Electricfix member.

However if you have additional information that may mean you qualify then just reply to this email with the relevant membership, registration or qualification that you hold. If you are replying with a qualification that you currently hold then please include the name of the course you studied, where you studied it and when the qualification was awarded.

If you could also supply the first line of your address this will enable you to process your application on our system.
"

As I was in a bit of a snippy mood and couldn't be bothered argueing the ---- with a customer service executive or what ever I replied with "Thank you for your response.
I'm not sure what additional information you'd like? I supplied my registration number for Elecsa which confirms my approved contractor status. I could list the qualifications which enabled me to gain that status. However, if being a part 'P' registered approved contractor is insufficient I'm not sure it's worth the effort so I'll stick with the trade accounts I have."

I wasn't expecting a reply, so I was a bit surpried when one came back within minutes. Even more surprised when I read it "Thank you for your prompt reply

It is our pleasure to inform you that your application to join Electricfix has been accepted.

We have processed your application and have updated your account to show you as an Electricfix customer."

Who knows what goes through their tiny minds and computers, just bizzare.

In answer, ....not much!

When they kicked off with this electricfix thing, they sent me 6 membership cards and I recieved 6 catalouges all on the same day
A little later and I received another 6 catalogues
They were sponsored by the Niceic and Eca,so why they wanted to register a Napit member 6 times over makes you wonder
