Dear Experts - I have a Clarke's Industrial fan and would like to use it to cool our large conservatory. It's got a 3speed setting but even slowest is moderate Windy Day mode. It's rated 350w. I'm having trouble locating a dimmer that's rated 450w ish. I don't intend to run it for extended periods on Gale Force 8 but would appreciate any help. I see I can get 400w light dimmers. Are they suitable? Temperatures in conservatory often exceed 30 deg C.
All help welcome. DW

Many lighting dimmers will not function correctly with a heavily inductive motor load, however there are phase-angle power controllers especially designed for fan motors such as
Speed controllers - - Electronic speed controller - EFSC

However not all fan motors are suitable for electronic speed control. It will depend to an extent on the existing internal speed control arrangement and whether a run capacitor is fitted, assuming it is an induction motor.

The problem with using a dimmer instead of a fan speed control is that a dimmer has no minimum setting whereas a fan speed controller won't go below a certain speed to prevent the motor running into a stall condition or running so slow it overheats due to lack of ambient air-over or slow running of the cooling fan on the back of the motor.
