Hi chaps
I went to a job yesterday , problem with lights in a conservatory and the owner produced two certs for the original work carried out, one full install cert and the other a minor works . The certs were well filled in and the readings all looked fine but they were plain forms produced by a company called quewtech , he had put a company stamp on them with all his information but he was not a member of any of schemes . Is this o.k ? if so then why don't we all do it and save a few quid .

The full cert was for the conservatory power and lighting internal and external, and the minor works was a spur off the ring for an electrical heater. So all work carried out away from a special location any competent person can issue some sort of cert ?

Of course you can produce your own certs

you can even photocopy them out of the regs and use them.

Personally I use the NAPIT desktop software so that way I can email the certs to the customer.
Also it means there is a backup of my certs on the NAPIT Server

Agree, absolutely nothing wrong with issuing certs which do not come from one of the "clubs". There may be issues around whether what you are doing forms part of work which is subject to planning permission/building warrant, as Councils require sparks to be registered with a scheme provider, if the customer wishes to avoid further fees with the LABC arranging independant inspection (which has to be agreed before work starts).

Regards.

I think the point is not the forms - and any form is fine, as long as it is based on the IET forms, you can also download them from the IET website - but whether whoever issued them is registered under part p scheme or not.

If there are new circuits then its notifiable and if they'e not registered with a scheme they need to have informed labc before installation began (and then maybe paid to have it tested after complete, depending on how 'competant' labc feel the contractor is).

If this didn't happen and he's not registered he's done a naughty. Like the 3 separate 'handymen' advertising all electrical work in my local paper this week.

- just noticed it's a conservatory not extension, so probably just extented existing circuits?

Thats the problem with the nonsense part p
hercule you probably know they are most likely not following the nonsense procedures of notifying, nevertheless they are advertising a full service and doing nothing wrong

As you know they, could just say to trading standards or whoever, that there is a legal route without registration that they follow
Who can prove them wrong?

I hold a certificate that says I have passed an exam in the applicable building regulations (yes, the same one anybody doing a part P Exam hold) I paid ÂŁ30 for the exam, studied the electricians guide to the building regs, and did the exam

I have a number of years experience in electrical work, hold a gold jib card and do a great deal of inspection and testing. I do not belong to any of the clubs and use the standard model forms from the regs.

I have only once had a certificate challenged, by a jumped up clerk of works at a certain London borough, and I demonstrated to him that I had the necessary training and experience. He still was not satisfied so I told him to give it a light coating of oil and shove it where the sun doesn't shine

Apart from that single incident, I have always been able to satisfy the local building authorities of my competence both with my work and my certificates

External as in the garden? If so then that's notifiable so he should be registered.

NOTE:
I'm not saying he's incompetant, or that part 'P' is a good thing, just that under the current rules that bit at least is notifiable.
