Hello all,

I am just looking for a bit of advice (I hope in the right place - my appologies if it isn't).

I am currently a marine engineer (electrical) in the Royal Navy, having completed my apprenticeship and gained a Foundation Degree in marine engineering several years ago.

I will be leaving the navy shortly (on medical grounds) and am considering starting out as a self-employed marine electrician. I live on the South Coast where there are loads of marinas.

Does anyone know whether this is a sensible idea? Is this a real job, or do yachties just use domestic electricians? Also, I cannot find any guidance on what regs/quals apply to private vessels.

Many thanks in anticipation of your replies,

Darby.

Hi, there are jobs through agencies looking for sparks, but must have experience in the last 3 years, not a great job, paying about ÂŁ16ph. Dockyard work

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I'm more interested in private work rather than dockyard stuff.

I've already been offered a senior electrical engineer role in ship-building in Barrow-in-Furness but don't really want it. I have got a one-off opportunity to start up on my own due to a decent pay-out and pension from the Navy and want to make use of it.

Cheers.

welcome,

i to was a Engineer from the Navy (Submarines) and i got medical discharged in Feb this Year..
I looked at Marine stuff but got put off by the fact that people wont let you near there boat unless you work for a yard..! daft as it sounds they dont really want you any where near them bloody things..!

why not get involved in Industrial work with the good old 3 phase background..!

drop me a msg if you have any questions..

also the most run down and diabolical naval base in western europe...!!! half the flaming yard will never see work again!! old timber workshops and slipways in south yard prime example, along with the water pumping tower....

surprisingly YES it did.... My Navy career ended at the edge of 10 dock when a steel door came crashing in to me whilst wearing Fire fighting and BA equipment..!! DML failed to maintain there gear and end result was me been taken by Ambulance to Derriford hospital with damage to my Spinal Tissue / Vertebrae and 2 Discs.
:(

bet you never expected that response!! lol
