Do a couple of jobs, one notifiable and one minor works, and put an application for domestic installer scheme, as to start up cost? varies a great deal, you could start up for a couple of grand or if you buy a van and a boat load of tools straight off could be ten grand, most just get what they need as they go along, obviously tester is the first big expense

Agree with the posts above....but one consideration is sticking with the trade for a little longer and use it to gain the experience and contacts which would make starting up as self-employed a little easier in a year or so?

Have you spoke to your employers about training and development?

The costs of self-employment aren't really the issue presently, the amount of paying work out there is more critical. Sorry, don't mean to dampen your enthusiasm but you're in a good position presently and you can always start up on your own later?

Anyway, in case your mind is made up:
- Van £1500
- Megger or Fluke (etc) £600
- Insurances £300pa
- Basic tools £250
- Trade subscription £400
- Part P training £700
- Advertising?
- Running costs (diesel, etc)
- Accountant? £500pa (varies enormously)

Have you got 2391, as thats a must mate, although you say you are qualified , what av yer got.

I have got my 17th regs, my part p, my level 2 level 3, my 2392 inspection and testing still got to do my 2391 which is part of the course i'm taking. but as it stands can i sign off my own work or do i have to get registered with a governing body.

they want 2391 if you are doing domestic periodic inspection reports. but agree with getting some varied experience under your belt first, its very easy to feel a bit out of your depth in this game sometimes without it. maybe do a few months or more with this lot and then have a look at some other contractors.

theres no law thats says you need qualifications to carry out electrical installations or testing and certification maybe its about time they did to get rid of some of the cowboys that ive come accross who have had 2391 , nic regestered etc
