Here's an interesting book just out for those that like this sort of thing, it's good to know things are safer now than they were back then, well at least I hope they are.

"It was largely thanks to the courage of deputy general manager Tom Tuohy that the Lake District is still habitable today. When all else had failed to stop the fire, Tuohy, a chemist, now dead, scaled the reactor building, took a full blast of the radiation and stared into the blaze below."

"I could always tell when my husband had been irradiated… because... his hair was standing on end when he came home."

Most of my family live in the surrounding areas and more than half have worked at Sellafield (aka Seascale). One of my uncles worked as a scaffolder for over 40 years, a few aunties worked in the kitchen and launderette and my cousin works as a H&S officer for the contractors.

When the book talks about Sellafield being a big part of local live its not lying. Big industry has almost gone in the area and a lot of people have moved away to find work. Shame really because its a beautiful part of the country and lovely people as well.

The locals don't get on with the outside contractors and I can remember when I was 19 visiting relatives for the weekend and going out on the Friday night being confronted by a group of out of work local lads. But after I explained why I was in Whitehaven they became very friendly and we all had a great night out.

If you get the chance, have a weekend break in Whitehaven. Great countryside, good coastal towns and only a 30 drive from the lake district. Don't worry about the radio active fall out, most of it has dropped to a safe level lol.

Well i am about a third of the way through it now as we are now in to the grain store season and time to be reading is somewhat limited .
It is not as good as i had hoped but still a more than worthy read so far !
Thanks again La Poste for bringing it to the forum .:hurray:

Ive actually worked there and other than my 3 testicles im fine... but seriously we wired some pre-fab porta cabins on site in 20hrs and they pointed out that there onsite sparkies took over a week to achieve the same, after job we were drafted to head office and asked how we cut time down so much with still high standards... they didn't like the fact we said that we worked for the money we earned and if it took longer than a day and a half then its taking the..... ss, we left for home at that point but the grapevine told us a few sparkies got sacked on the strength of it, ive found this true in hospitals and large college complex too, the resident sparkies tend to be cup of tea time all day and lazy, they hate external sparkies only because they show up they lazyness.

I think this has been the same since the first contractor ever set foot on a job !
Funnily enough one of the last passages i have just read was from a ex welding charge hand and he makes it quite plain that most of the staff there are chancers .
