I just recieved yet another phone call from a previous customer who has a seperate cooker hob and every 6 months or i have to replace hob due to this tripping one 30ma rcd from a split 17th edition board. I cant put it on a non rcd protected way due to a socket outlet in the cooker switch. My problem is that problem seems to be with one ring in particular every time that the ring corrodes over time very badly with the enamel lifting of the ring which would indicate a possible over heating situation but these are new hobs every time. I must add but they are cheap hobs around ยฃ50 or so supplied by the customer.

My only suggestion is that i provided a good named brand hob and try a glass top hob this time to try and prevent this as its annoying having to return now for what will be the 3rd visit in 1 and half years

Insulation is only bad once hob heats so indicates element failure.

Any other suggestions for solutions please

just goes to prove the saying " you get what you pay for" these cheap hobs are not worth the effort of fitting them. as you say, get him to pay for a decent quality hob and it will last for years.

Tell them to stop buying crap units and then they may last longer, hope you are getting paid for your re-visits,what you pay is what you get,if they invest a bit more surely it will be more cost efficient over the life of a product.

As above. I had a customer that used to boil milk in a saucepan on one particular ring. It regularly used to boil over and run into the guts of the hob via the power indicator lamp hole, with predictable results.

Could it be something to do with the stuff she is cooking with as the fault is the same every time???

Do any other rings show signs of breakdown???

i was kinda thinking that issue to that for some reason she only uses that ring and either stuff spilling all the time or whatever she uses to clean it etc.

It just makes us look bad having to replace them all the time but i know for a fact all connections are tight etc

Its also the fact that people are never 100% truthful when you ask these questions

same with cheap ovens. i got a call on friday from a new customer, asking me to connect a brand new oven. he asked for a price, said the cable was there, just needed connecting to the cooker. so i said ยฃ40 if its just a quick connect. got there, jeez., 2.5mm bare ends cooker MCB off. cooker switch tiled in solid. checked oven rating at 16A. OK., 2.5mm adequate. 1 terminal screw in oven won't tighten up, rear cover off, threaded plate on terminal missing, internal wiring from terminals connected L and N wrong way round. ยฃ30 please for coming out, take the oven back to where you bought it.

i dont really want to spend time opening it up as should still be in manufacturers warrenty period so will disconnect for them tell them get a refund if they can and as you say get them get a ceramic hob
