Hi I'm new to this, I am doing a rewire and am confused about the service cut out fuse can I take it out my self, my old boss did but my friend who changes meters says that it is illegal to cut the stickers and remove it. Any help would be great.

Illegal to work live also!

Ongoing argument........................................

If YOU do decide which of the evils is lesser,

Make sure all circuits are turned off before pulling................

There are things that could and DO go wrong, best advice is to request a main isolator to be installed, big bang and death if it goes ---- up!

I pull all of mine and reseal afterwards with a completely different looking seal, therefore no chance of being accused of fraud. THIS IS MY CHOICE and an informed if illegal one!

When its out I remove the fuse from the holder and refit the carrier, this protects the open fuse holder, it is so easy when stripping back T+E for the earth to snake into an open holder!!!!!

agree with CBW on this its illegal , it will cost around ÂŁ35.00 to get the DNO in to install a switch makes it easier for the future to so you then can carry out safe isolation as you are required to do , yes we do cut seals but its not the way to go , i do think its about time the rules were changed and we were issued with our own seals at the end of the day we are qualified sparks one day course and our own seals label with details of seal replacement job done

the only problem there, Nick, is that it would encroach on the DNO's divine right.

yes the right not to bother turning up when asked they are very reluctant to budge on it as well , we are in a catch 22 situation dogy tails at the meter say from he meter to the CDU are not the responcability of the DNO but the customer but they are sealed and we are not allowed to touch them so in my eyes its there responcability so how are we ment to change tails like this when the fail to turn up when requested digi camera 007.jpg

Aha, not neccesseraly, I have seen some of the work carried out recently, The USA are also in recession and using cheaper labour.

One recently had a lovely RCD....All on its own on a 16th board.....That said, I do not have any stickers for electric chair, that has to be an April wind up, I will get the wife to make a sticker to put on a Wylex board!!!!!

Unauthorised pulling of the DNO fuse is going to become more conspicuous post smart-meter installation because the meter technology will have a back-up supply and "phone home" with an alarm signal indicating supply interruption to the installation. The intention is that these alarm calls will be logged and investigated by DNO fraud and abstraction team.
However the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) in collaboration with the Association of Meter Operators (AMO), Energy Networks Association (ENA), ECA, ELECSA, NAPIT, NICEIC, and SELECT, submission to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is for smart meters with integral isolating switches and unsealed outgoing terminals, similar to the current Siemens S2AS meters already in service in some areas. It is proposed that isolating in this manner will not trigger the unauthorised interruption alarm.
It is vital therefore that all interested parties, who want to have easy electrician friendly installation isolation, support the ESC submission. For further details follow the links below:
