Hi I am a electrician from central Scotland and I am looking to start my own electrical contracting buisness. I've been working for the same company for 15 years and now it's time to go for it. I've got some savings so can buy a van, tools etc. my questions are
1-can I complete test sheets and not be with the nic or select ?
2-do I need to be registered with the government to complete work to building standards?
3-any other tips would be great
thank you

1-Yes, if you are competent to do so.
2-No, if you know what the standards are and can work in accordance with them.
3-No tips at the moment ... you are in advance of me with 15 years of valuable experience, depending on the quality of the standards set by your current employer.

However, if you actually mean by 2 'can you notify' work requiring notification to building control (BC) without you or your customer incurring significant additional cost? The answer to this is that in order to notify BC in a cost efficient manner you need to register with either NICEIC or SELECT.

D, yes it does, but Part 'P' does not apply. Notifiable work is different, for example full rewire of 2 floor private property does not require notification! If you go to 3 floors then it does.

So you can get around it by rewiring one and a half floors one year and the other one and a half floors another year .. yes??? :sailor:

You do not have to be NIC or SELECT to satisfy building control. Each council has their own views on this. After contacting almost every council in Scotland I have only found three that require this but if pushed hard enough they will accept test certs with proof of competence (photocopy of grade card) and proof of calibration of teeing equipment.

... NO! ;-P ... if a property has more than 3 floors ... I assume that this relates to a historically higher risk in the case of fire; escape is more difficult etc. I also assume that it relates to 'having to draw a line somewhere' in matching resources to task!

Is that for your golf course negotiations?
