Do many people do it, and is it worth it?

I already work doing electrical maintenance and installations on the railways, everything from domestic lighting to 25KV protection systems, but as I get a fair amount of free time (and overtime is drying up) I am considering doing a little part time work to supplement my income.

I have 17th and 2391 and a reasonable amount of experience in industrial work, but not a lot in the domestic side of things - never chased a wall, lifted boards or anything like that so I'm more inclined to stay on the industrial side of things. Also have F-Gas certification.

So, other than:

Tools
Vehicle
Equipment
Insurance
Advertising
"Normal business set up procedures"

Is there anything else I need to consider? (I am sure there will be!)

Thanks, James :D

Google business link and take one of their free courses on setting up your own business covers everything you need to know then assess the costs of your list plus the usual public and professional insurances.

The current climate makes it pretty tough and for you it will be worse as you will be turning away some of the work that may be coming your way because your on shift at work.

Best of luck

Chris

Hi Chris - thanks for that. Have you got a direct link for the courses? I seem to be struggling to find it

I understand that my workload may be limited due to my full time job, although I finish at 15:30 each day and have fri/sat/sun off each week which leaves some time to fit jobs in. Looking mostly at smaller jobs, not rewires or anything like that, or possibly bigger jobs if the customer is understanding about my time constraints.
