Hi, can you guys quickly settle an argument for me and win me a tenner. What would happen if a live was connected to a neutral by mistake in a ring?

I guess the smart **** answer is it will fail an insulation resistance test.

cheers Andy

Can we please have the two opposing theories on the outcome of joining a live and neutral that this tenner rests upon.

Yes...I should have added if you could switch it on in the first place.

Now there lies logical thinking

With the information you gave, nothing will happen,if you add energised l-n then a different ballpark,

The red would be connected to the black
The brown would be connected to the blue
The circuit would be dead shorted
The mcb would operate and probably cease to exist
The customer would have a heart attack
The boss would be angry
The employee would be looking for another job

On the positive side, the electrician will have tested the circuit, found the problem, sorted it out then energised and no one would be any the wiser:)

Don't forget a trip to to court if someone gets seriously hurt via the HSE

you would hear the customer shouting "Is it supposed to do that" with a blank type look on there face :)

Do you mean if a live conductor were connected to a neutral conductor, or if the live wires were connected into the neutral terminal (and vice versa)?
If the former, the protective device should operate.
If the latter, one socket would have reverse polarity.
