Hi anyone have views on this.

My lad allowed recently (against my advice) to let the next door neighbour tap off of his MET to supply an earth for his property.

I enquired at the nic and he has not done nothing wrong in their eyes.

However i popped in the house the other day to take a look and to my suprise he not only has the guys earth he also has his main head and fuse in his mains cupboard.

So at anytime he could pull next doors power.

No its not a house converted into two , its two seperate semi detached houses

ANY OPINIONS ON THIS WELCOME

You get shared mains supplies a lot in Leeds as the old YEB never had an upgade program before they went private. I used to work for MANWEB and they where always replacing old mains cables. Does the 2nd property have a mains cut out? If not then i can't see how the property complies with any electrical Reg including Supply Regs. It's my belief that if you have a neighbours supply cable running through your property (eg. through a cellar) you can request that it is removed and the neighbour gets a new supply free of charge.
Personnally i wouldn't want my neigbours cable running through my property in case it ever went down (developed fault-burnt out) but most providers are only interested in taking your cash rather than your safety eg. ÂŁ151 to provide PME TERMINAL .

hi
so are yeb obliged to remove and reroute the cable to the 2nd property?
just my parents nextdoors supply is clipped along the under side of their fascia and is quite unsightly to say the best.

To Chris, i take it you meant on the outside of the building. If so, not quite sure. I suppose it would not pose a significant problem should a fault develop, compered to it running on the inside. You tend to find it on terraced streets or council town houses.I suppose it's the same as running the cable underground through a neighbours garden. Regards the cable sited inside the property, i recall being told by a YEDL engineer that it is only the property owner who has the neighbours supply running through, that can request removal, thus resulting in a new supply for neigbour.
The reason for this conversation was trying to provide a PME terminal -being 2nd in line from a shared supply. Thus ,a customer who receives their supply from a shared supply cannot request a new supply free of charge but by asking their neighbour to complain they have to comply.
