Just getting round to slowly sorting things out in my house. Outbuilding has been wired previously but is looking dated and messy and want to renew it all before the garden is done in case there are problems and new cable run is needed. It has swa cable running from house to shed, not sure on size but only need lighting and two double sockets. About 18 metre run.

At the shed end this is connected to an old earth leaking circuit breaker which is then connected to a 4 way JB – two leading to double sockets and the other going to a switch then onto a strip light. Doesn't lighting need fusing down to 6amp? All is currently disconnected in the shed when I bought it the house.

Had a price off an electrician for install 2 way breaker etc but want a cheap option to do myself as only for a light and lawnmower / charging drill etc. What’s the best way to set up in the shed? Need to feed two double sockets and strip light. Thinking feed straight into socket then onto another socket. Then onto FCU 6amp to JB for light and switch.

Any suggestions please.

Thanks

Lloyd

Cheaper option ,its a notifable job so you have to notify the council ,with out doing the calcs an knowing what board you have ,id use a 6 mm 3 core swa back to the CDU this will compensate for voltage drop and give you more flexabilty on what you can use ,terminate into a galve u box and come from there in PVC/PVC unlessyou got a metal clad CDU ,protect with a 32 amp RCBO ,dig a nice big trench 600mm deep layer of sand lay cable in then another layer of sand then marker tape the back fill to around 300 mm from surface then more marker tape then finsih filling ,2 way garage CDU ,1 for light and 1 for socket ..its not as simple as putting a supply to a shed , cable should be swa minimum 6 mm

loydus,
If you do this job yourself, can I add have you considered wheather or not you have considered your earthing arrangements for the new installation?- are there any extraneous conductive parts in the new building/area to be supplied? what sort of suppply do you have in the house, TT, TNS, TNCS ETC ?.
Seriously mate, on here you can have lots of excellent advice on how to sort problems, however, the best advice for you is this Get a Sparky in to do this one !!
We as electricians as a whole are moving towards educating the public that they should only use electricians that are qualified.Whichever one you use, he or she will not mind being asked for proof that they are a qualified electrician.

sorry M8 but Tidying up the wiring in your shed might look prety but it may also make it Unsafe as advised get a sparky into do it or at least get one to check and test what you have doneL letting the motherinlaw loose with the flymo isnt realy a good way of checking the safety

Dammit :D

Seriously though, outbuildings need careful consideration with regards to electrical installations, due to being outside equipotential zones, RCD protection, earthing & loading.

And, as said, this work will need to be notified to your LABC which could cost in excess of £100.

Why not employ the services of a local electrician to advise you?

You could always buy the materials and do the donkey work to keep costs.

That way you keep it all above board, and safe.
