Need advice , My brother in law got a shock of the screws on the kitchen light switch. The kitchen ceiling has just been overboarded & skimmed. New metal spot light (with LED's in base) fittings have replaced old plastic spot lights (not requiring earth). Same switches are in place. Voltmeter tests 240 v to copper water pipes from metal back box. No continuity on earth from switch to light fitting.

you need to get an electrician there before there's a funeral. end of.

What they all said, by the way who fitted the new lights?

probably the same one who put a board screw/nail into a cable.

No kitchen fitters or plasterers involved, are there ?

my mistake, i didnt read opening post.

it would be best to isolate the circuit till you can get an electrician to look at it

Only the guy who did the ceiling

May be more than just a ceiling replacement, though......how often a full story? Has he got certification?.. etc.

Course not unless it's a Electrical Trainee one

hold on a sec, does he get a zap off anything else?

it could be static, has the board got an rcd? if it has its probably static but there is no way to tell without tests being done

Pretty powerful static at 240V from metal back box to water pipes!

my mistake didnt read all opening post, sounds like that should be isolated at board, must have screwed through cable.

there are really only two options if the cable has been screwed though.

make a mess of the ceiling and patch it or.

attempt to find damage by lifting boards above then reassess the situation

As above, isolate and get electrician in. If it is screw from over boarding and not just one replacement light, he/she can narrow down fault location and avoid unnecessary damage
