You’ve worked for one of the same companies as I. “Closed shop” when I started. You had to be in a union or no job, it would be the company that sacked you for refusing to join a union. You know what a shop steward was/is.

It was the EEPTU when I started, not an insurance broker whatever it calls it’s self now. It had teeth then. Strength sapped by the amalgamation with the AEU. Finally crippled by “Sir” Eric Hammond being in Maggie’s handbag.

When I started in the union we were still struggling to rid ourselves of the communist trials. Years later I went to the union collage, in the library the minutes for 52 to 59 were filed under fiction.

We fought back to be one of the strongest unions, no union card no work on any reasonable sized site. Even the JIB had to bow down.

Electricians were respected then, look at us now!

thankless task now tony,the non union lads want answers and the benefits of union membership that it brings(which as non union members they dont deserve imo) gaffers hate you,have to watch your back every second as they want to get you on some trumped up charge..

I wouldn't want to do it. I would hate to have to argue on behalf of some people who don't deserve the support.
