single pole devices

Hi All

Why must single pole devices be fitted in the phase conductor? I understand that polarity must be assured through out the circuit but is it a bit more in depth than this?

Hi single pole devices must be fitted in that way for safety uniformity and compliance with the BRB have a look at 132.14 on page 18 of said BRB.

Imagine what would happen if the switch was in the neutral conductor on a socket outlet ..... the live would still be connected to appliance even when switched off... dangerous. HTH

Because if you did'nt switch the live or should I say line then you would'nt really be switching the circuit / equipment off ' circuit / equipment would still be live but the neutral return would be disconnected.

Thanks for the replies. A few mins after I posted the question the answer became obvious. Turn the switch off but the light fitting would still be live, not good! Especially if you went to change an Edison. Thanks again though.

single pole devices must be installed in the phase conductor as this is in-line with the protective device

incorrect polarity would stop the flow of current through the neutral but would not effectively isolate the device/circuit/equipment as a potential voltage would still be present.

Edison Screw lampholders (except insulated E14/E27 types) must observe correct polarity.
