I've fitted/moved a 50" tv reset into chimney breast, 2 twin sockets behind, surround sound etc...now sky tv will not work...'no signal'...

I had to extend the cable and cut and spliced extended coax (best coax approved for sky etc)

I have done many tv/cctv extensions and understand the need to maintain screen etc etc and never had a problem.

But never done a sky move...anyhow the man in the pub today (the man knows everything about anything, ...) said sky coax is calibrated from the dish to tv in metres, if cut or extended the calibration will stop the signal. He says this was done to stop neighbours sharing a dish...is that true?

Must admit it sounded feasable the way he explained...but I have an irate customer whom can't live without sky tv, until the sky engineer turns up on tuesday next week. I'm sure he will blame me for the joint I made...I can see it now ...sky man...'what idiot did this'?....that will be £150 thanks...

Isnt there always a man in the pub thats an expert on everything?
He is talking total Bo*****s. The only thing that happens when the cable is longer is that there is a loss of signal level and quality. The only safe way to extend a dish feed is with 2 "f" connectors and a back to back "f" coupler. As the cable also carries DC supply and a 22khz switching frequency you cant just tape it together and hope for the best.:(

DRAT beaten to it

How do I extend my cable?

what a load of............

most likely a short somewhere

As Golden_Boy says F-Plugs with F-Jack to jack adaptor, however if the distance between dish and receiver box gets near a 15 meter cable run a booster will be required.
PF100 cable is the stuff that is more than adequate for sky.

It could be a short, however, what you must always do before working on any Sky box is to turn the power off before you unplug the feeds.

It is very easy to fry the LNB.

where did that 15m thing come from i had been told 100 cable will do 90m max
i used 125 the other week for a 70m run to be safe

Chances are that when you cut the coax to extend it an internal fuse popped (supply fuse to LNB).

If the unit is out of warrenty, open it up and have a check (unlpug the mains first)

A short on the LNB supply would not normally cause permanent damage. It will cause the power supply to go into trip but it should recover without any bother. However the LNB may be damaged and the only way to try it is to replace it. First thing to do is try your receiver on a known good LNB/dish and then go from there

Thanks guys, a learning curve for me. I'm going back tomorrow, problems on my end are cables now plastered in....but not yet decorated, so I'll need to pull out from plaster work. The joints I made seems not ok...oh well a difficult explanation needed on my behalf to customer...I only was providing power, and hidden cables etc behind the tv... but unfortunately expanded in extending sky coax feeder

It seems I was mistaken that sky supply coax is just the same as normal coax tv signal cable...oh well live and learn...very embarrassing as I was reccomended doing the exact same type of job, except the last one was digital only tv....**** I hate the thought of ...don't use him he's useless etc etc etc....and a sky engineer is turning up on tuesday, i need to fix before he turns up
