...stupid foreign harmonised ( with who?) daft phase colours.

Nobody was using the harmonised phase colours, however all of Europe minus the UK was using Blue for Neutral for fixed wiring, we had however, been using it in flexible cord for a number years. It was the UK harmonisation working group that proposed Brown, Black, Grey for the phases to CENELEC. They expected to have a fight on their hands and had a bargaining strategy planned, however the proposal was adopted with barely a whimper from the member countries representatives and no bargaining required (the only time, so far), despite every country having to change to the new code.

1977? flaming youngster. i was just getting into VCR repairs as these were new fangled contraptions and as a TV repair company, we had to learn how to fix these as well.

My mentor when I was training also did TV, video repairs. He said he spent a lot of time getting qualified, only for it to go down the pan after a few years.
Almost like PV eh?

yeah, mine went down the pan 1980. the stuff got more reliable and punters would not spend ÂŁ30 repairing the old TV when they could get a brand new one for a tenner down and change of address. was good while it lasted , though. esp. over crimbo. instead of a tenner call-out, it was a score and i was doing 15 calls a day.

The TV repairman would tap the valves with a screwdriver, replace a couple, maybe solder in a new component, those were the days. He would need a microscope these days with SMT, but as said TV's are so cheap you just replace them.

tap the valves with a screwdriver.

good old days. when cpc first started, they sold 2nd hand valves from stripped out scrap TVs. they came individually wrapped in newspaper at a fraction of the cost. look at cpc now.
