Is there a requirement when changing a CU for instance of sleeving the old red/black cables with the new colours brown/blue?

no.......coz. if you did that, you'd have to sleeve at all fittings. no chance. only if you are adding new colour cables, fix label stating 2 colour codes.

when doing a board change, i always change earth sleeving, its normally tired green. to nice 3mm green and yellow. but thats probably because for some reason back in the day before my time, they fff ing loved to twiddle all the rings togther arrghh!! so i untwiddle them and re sleeve. for R1 RN R2 readings and r1+r2 cross connecting.

old saying " if it ain't broke, don't fix it. " nothing wrong with red/black tails. only replace if undersized or damaged. sometimes they will be too short so that would entail ( pardon the pun ) replacement.

I have also looked at a 5x5 split load board with a 100A main switch 4 MCBs Kitchen main, two lighting circuits and garage feed (RCD at garage end in CU) then other side 80A 30Ma RCD covering two rings and shower circuit.
Q: to bring up to standard would it not be esiest to change MCBs from 100A main to RCBOs or should I install and RCD (63A) to cover the 4 MCBs?

This has to be a cheaper option than a new board?

By the way I am a time served sparks with 2391 and about to do 17th, just been in management too long and trying to update myself after redundency

you can't change the main switch for RCD or you will have 2 RCDs supplying the other side. if there is room ( 2 spare ways ) then you could fit a RCD alongside the main switch. or, as you say RCBO 3 circuits ( not the garage , as it's already got one ). even fitting RCBO to just the kitchen would be an improvement. as long as you are not doing any work on the 2 lighting circuits, they can be left without RCD protection.

Just had another thought what is wrong with replacing the main switch with a 100mA RCD double pole as main switch, that should bring it up to standard it is after all a TT sytem anyway?

NO. on a TT system, now, all circuits should have 30mA RCD. the best option is either RCBOs or, if there's room, add a RCD kit. ( RCD with tails )

Your right Telectrix, got confused with TT installations with cables with earthed mettalic covering! still gets the brain working and me up to speed!!

Thanks for your input.

takes me all my time to keep up. i grew up with 7/029 and 3/029. and cartridge fuses were for posh houses with a car and a telly that wasn't rediffusion.

Yep remember asking as an apprectice about that stuff as we were ripping out and rewiring, had a horrible covering that got your hands etc filthy.

You self employed or employed? I am hoping to get registered and find some work back on the tools doing a mix of domestic and industrial.
