Hi,*

I was just applying for a new job and the question popped up about do i have City & Guilds 2382 IEE wiring regulations qualification. Im not too sure what this one is? I completed my apprenticeship in 2009 and have a few certificates from that, those being:
Level 2 certificate in Electrotechnical Technology - Installation (Building and Structures)
Level 3 in the above
Level 3 certificate in Electrotechnical Services - Electrical Installation (Building and Structures)
AM2 Certificate

Is the 2382 part of these or am i missing something?*

This is a classic case of pen pushers who think they know it all. Unfortunately my friend, C&G 2382 aka 17th edition regs is a standalone qualification, and to lesser mortals such as pen pushers, they seem to think that without it you are not an electrician, wrong but true. So despite all the qualifications you have which do make you a qualified spark, you still need the 17th edition to pacify these people. If only they knew it is only a qualification in how to find info from a book, which is just a bit more involved than finding info in the Argos catalogue, and a monkey can pass it, then they might just see the real value of your other qualifications, and realise that you have been trained to the 17th edition standards anyway.

Cheers...........Howard

That is completley daft! I have my JIB Gold card and im even a QS for the company I work for currently so I know the bloody regs book like the back of my hand! Looks like i'm going to have to put myself through it before I even look for another job then!*:sad3:

Thanks for your help*

Fully agree. Your Apprenticeship was to the 17th Edition so you don't need it, but as said try explaining that to a potential employer asking for it! By the same token because I didn't take the 2381 certificate for the 16th Edition I wasn't able to do the 17th Edition update course (but had to do full course instead) despite City & Guilds own requirements in the qualifications stating that I could take the update as I had completed relevant qualifications during my Apprenticeship to the 16th Edition.

You'll find that employers often haven't got a clue what they're talking about, but it doesn't stop them stipulating all sorts of things!

Just take the online exam at a collage don't bother with any course you'll be bored stiff, the hardest thing is finding a collage which will let you sit the exam as an external student, a waste of time for someone in your position IMO
