Hi,

I'm installing garden power and lighting for someone. Their consumer unit is full and they don't want to change it, so I'm proposing a Henley block and a small CU specifically for the outdoor power.

The question is this: Does the small 2-way CU have to have a master switch, or can the tails from the Henley block go directly into an RCD?

The CU I'm looking at is this:
MK Sentry 4-Way RCD Garage Consumer Unit - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys

But it obviously doesn't have a master switch.

Much appreciated!

No, you can take the tails straight to the RCD switch. The RCD is the master switch for this particular CU

How many lights and power points are you installing. What are the power points being used for.

Installing a Wise Controls radio switch to control 4 channels, each with 4 lights. Half the lights are 12 volt. I'm going to run all of that off a 6A Type B. Power is only a double socket, running off a 16A Type B.

1.5mm 3-core SWA will be used for the lighting. The maximum run is approximately 20 metres.
2.5mm 3-core SWA will be used for the sockets on a radial. Maximum run is about 5 metres. Sockets are used for garden equipment i.e. strimmers, etc.

Obviously RCD is required. If the RCD can be used as the master switch as well, it helps keep the cost down.

As Securityvillage said, but can't you run the outdoor socket of the ring.Saves on armoured from the board and just run the armoured for the socket from an IP rated adaptable box.Maybe i am wrong.

So pleased to see another Euan. It's the name of our youngest!

It's getting more and more popular, which is great. Unfortunately I was named 36 years ago when it wasn't so popular :-D

Mac: Unfortunately not. There's no socket close by, and it's only 5 metres. To be honest, I could run the socket in 1.5mm given the ratings, but I'm a stickler for safety and for other electricians coming in and judging from what is there :-D

Just found this:
An RCD should not be used as a main switch 314.2

in this forum, so I guess I can't do it. I'll go and buy a 5 way instead!
