I have just found out that you now need to produce a certificate for the installation of new smoke alarms. As I am registered with the NICEIC I have ordered some today but wont get them till the end of next week so i am just trying to find out if anyone has filled one of these out yet and what is involved and what gear you need to test them

There is two to my knowledge, a simple commisioning cert, and a more indepth cert both about a page long, when you get the cert you may need some info in the form of fire alarm installation regs to answer or tick some boxes as it requires you to tick one of many systems that are used and as they are just ref' figures you may need to find out what they mean, just been told today that kirklees council wont recognise my cert (niceic) as i installed the fire alarm and and independant approved contractor has to commision it so depending on your region keep a look out for this situation.

I issue a certificate generated by myself. It simply confirms that I have installed a particular grade of fire alarm, how many smoke and heat rise detectors there are and where they are located, the date, and who I am.

The requirement is given in BS5839 Part 6, and there are various interpretations available on the internet.

I have not yet met the problem sited above re installer/commissioner so I guess this is council dependant. But my certificate is quite specific "I have installed and tested" if a council requires more then it would be upto the owner to arrange an independant tester.
