hi guys,
is it OK to install smoke alarm on the wall rather than ceiling? customer don't want to see this on glass ceiling(light-well) in the landing/stairs area . cheers

Only mount there as 2nd best as behaviour of smoke from a fire causes smoke to rise to ceiling;
it will definitely be slower to trigger the alarms on the wall than ceiling.
This is why some manufacturer's do not even mention location other than ceiling, in their manuals.

If you call their Tec Dept they will offer as option assuming when alarms were tested for conformity
with the Smoke Alarm standard, they were also tested in that plane, and not just ceiling mounted.

See here:-

Siting Guidance

:)

From page 122 of the Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations:

Positioning of equipment

...

7
Only alarms and detectors suitable for wall mounting are to be wall mounted and are to be fixed above doorway height.

...

Hope that helps.

I didn't realise till reading this thread that wall mounting was an alternative to ceiling
Again, it seems important to keep away from the dead zone around the ceiling /wall point
