Hi all,

I have been asked to install smoke detectors in a three storey building in the stair well. I am not clued up on the regulations for this.

Ideally the client wants one on every floor outside the front door of the flats. every wall is solid and he suggested possibly getting wireless smokes? Also he has been told by another firm that it couldnt be supplied from a consumer unit on the top floor it had to be from the incoming mains cupboard at the bottom of the building. They stated that this was illegal.

Any info and opinions on this much appreciated!!:)

You can get mains operated wireless interconnected smokes have a look at the aico website. It is acceptable to supply them from a normally used lighting circuit, so if you have a suitable light nearby on a loop circuit then feed each alarm from that and tune the smoke alarm bases as per the instructions. So if you had say 3 landings each with a light then you could feed each alarm from the local light on that landing. This would suffice for what you are trying to do as they would be near enough to each door to be heard.

Check with the client as he may need a fire alarm system and emergency lights if their are more than about 6 flats. Your local HMO licencing people at the council will be able to advise properly (HMO, house of mutiple occupancy)

Cheers.........Howard
