Hi Guys.

A customer of mine owns a shop and has had a visit from the Fire Officer who has informed her that she must fit mains, interlinked smoke detectors.

I haven't as yet seen the letter but my customer was sure that it wasn't demanding that she fit a fire alarm system just smoke detectors.

Do you guys think that Aico domestic wireless detectors will be acceptable, I do intend to contact the Fire Officer and check with him.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Steve.

You've kind of answered your own question Steve - speak to the inspecting officer. Presumambly he has carried out a fire risk assessment to reach his conclusion. Get his advice in writing.

Regards

A shop is classed as commercial premises and therefore must comform to BS5839 part 1, domestic premises need to comform to BS5839 part 6. so fitting domestic smokes will not comply. Too often fire officers state to fit interlinked smoke detectors and some even give the shop battery opperated smoke detectors. If the premises catch fire the insurance company and the HSE will will hold you responsible and you will find the fire officer making plenty of excuses to pass the buck. Good example is to Google coop fire safety. Apart from other issues they lost 2 shops to fire when the domestic smokes didnt activate in the own central station.
