So what can I do?

As I've probably mentioned before I'm studying c&g 2365 (at level 2, go into level 3 in sept) and I work on a holiday park for a big national company as a maintenance operative. We have no electrician employed and always use contractors for even simple things like replacing switches, sockets and light fittings in our static caravans and buildings. At what point can I do like for like replacements or any other simple electrical work (if ever....) from a legal point of view? Without getting hands on I will never get any experience but without being allowed to do any work because they're told to use a 'qualified electrician' its a catch 22. The company would be more than happy to let me, if I am legally allowed, as it would save them thousands per year and only call contractors in for bigger stuff.

I'll stick my neck out here because I know nothing about the UK legislation but if it's like for like replacement items and your competent to be able to prove dead and test the circuit when you've finished then I would say you could do.

There's no such thing as a qualified electrician in any of the legislation covering the trade. The key word is competence.

How can competence be proved? I can't work towards NVQs without the work to do it (which they'd fund). As a plus side, if I can do electrical work for them they've said they will cover my course costs (and reimburse me what i've paid so far if I start doing electrical work) as its in their interest. So is it a case of, if they're happy to let me do the minor stuff (I.e like for like) and minor fault finding for now I'm ok to do so as long as I feel it's within my capabilities (which I've always been slightly cautious over anyway)?

I would suggest a course covering caravan rules and regs if you can find one, not sure if a course on section 7 actually which covers that as well as other special locations is available around your area, but if there were a course and you took it, your company may then be able to accept you are competent at caravan small fixture replacements, Just an Idea, it is early and I may change my mind later :smilielol5:

No not really. Spoke to my tutor who said legally no reason why I can't do like for like replacements as long as I'm happy to do so and as I get into level 3 get more into fault finding at work. Spoke to a spark who's happy to take me along for jobs when I'm available too as a mate/spare pair of hands/cheap labour

Sounds promising. You've got to start somewhere and like for like replacements is as good a place as any in my book. It also helps if you have an association with a qualified sparky because sooner or later something will lead you outside of your comfort zone so it's nice to have a safety net where you can call him if there's problems or unforeseen hiccups.

You're both right, I was just half asleep when I replied. My boss doesn't want me doing much electrical though at all (he's worried that it'll take me off other stuff), which isn't good for progression.

Hi where do you live, and how are you getting on with the 2365 ?

I live in sunny Suffolk! The course is going well, would like more hands on work though. Just hope I don't suddenly forget the science part at the crucial time!

i am doing the 2365 trying to get my head around all the maths, formulas. where are you up to and any good books you know of ?

We've got to resistance, inductance and capacitance and the effects on ac circuits then as far as I'm aware (and as my hand out goes) we've got several weeks of revision until the science exam. My tutor recommends using Swindon massive website for revision or any 2330 books (the same stuff just in a different order). We get masses of handouts so luckily have lots of reference material to look through in down time.
