Soft starters

Hi Chaps

Just a quick one! I have not worked with soft starts very much! So forgive my lack of knowledge pls!

How do we control a soft starter?, does it have to be via a 24v or 120v control circuit? Or can we use the mains supply?

I am using a Schneider ATS01N222NQ 11 kW soft start to run a 7.5 kW fan unit via a 7.5 kW contactor. The contactor is operated via a start/stop button which supplies the soft start with 400v, the output voltage through the soft start is 395v which is kind of what I expected (as the voltage range is 30% - 80% full line voltage), however the fan will not move!!!! I was under the impression soft starters just needed a supply, and the soft start would do the rest!

Any help would be much appreciated pls

Thanks
Mark

I did some of my early studies of motor drives languishing in a Police cell in Manchester.
Got pulled for non payment of Council Tax, quick thinking, can I take something to read, yes says they, an ABB drive manual was the only book I could grab in time.
Helped pass those lonely hours go by quickly...or help me sleep.

After a quick look I would say you have to link LI+ to LI2 for it to start automatically when it gets its feed. Make sure your contactor goes in the feed to the soft-start, not after & never power it with its o/p disconnected otherwise you could destroy it. As Tony says, read the literature first.
