can anybody recommend some software iMac compatible for to edit the architects drawings, basically to add the electrical drawing details to drawing sent over?

Has the drawing been sent via a PDF file?

No but a but a pdf file is available.

Auto cad will be the only way of editing....presume the file is DWG

With pdf you wont be really able to edit, Auto cad is basically the industrial standard for drawings

for a one off job i would print the pdf, add whats needed by hand, scan the result, save as pdf.
you can also convert that pdf to a jpg or other graphic format and edit it in some graphic program (photoshop etc)
autocad costs £££ and takes a while to learn it too...

Try librecad. Free, open source.

search Google for the file format there will be a lot of different open source programs that can read it.

i know because i used to play around with proprietary model files from computer games

If you stuck, I can open the file in Autocad, and save back to pdf or wmf If this would help

Thanks tazz I have the file in pdf now but can't find the electrical symbol font pack for Adobe. I'll have to do it by pen this time. I usaully have someone else do the drawing but he's on holiday and I need to have the first one this week.
