Hi all new on here.

I am currently looking into the possibility of installing a 9.8 kw solar panel system on my shed roof. I have been quoted ÂŁ32,000 for the system and installation, where I would have 40 Sharp 245w solar panels along with a goverment backed inverter, then use of German approved fittings and fixtures wiring etc. The calculations that were made seem to give good return for my investment.
Would like to back up some of these claims as this is a big investment to undertake. Can anyone out there suggest where i would be able to ascertain sunshine hours for my area in Denbigh, North Wales? I have been doing some research into this, is ÂŁ32,000 a reasonable quote for this type of system? What should i look out for ?

pvgis is a good place to start to get an idea of output for your location/array size & orientation etc. From what I've read on other posts it seems a reasonably accurate tool.

Does your price include 20% VAT?

If so then that is a fair price, it all depends upon the quality of the workmanship.

You may get a slightly lower price elsewhere, you may even get offered a different panel, check the installers experience and credentials, and call some of his existing customers.

There are some very good installers out there that take pride in their work and will do a good job at a fair price, and then there are some that even though they are MCS registered shouldn't be let loose with a screwdiver.

If you can, at that level of investment, go and visit some of his customers and talk to them face to face - you would do something similar if you were buying a car or anything else at that price.

We regularly arrange for our prospective customers to talk to our existing clients, and on larger projects are happy to arrange site visits if we can for them.

It's just normal due diligence.

Forgot to mention that I am on single phase here, will this have an affect? Am I right in thinking that no planing permission is required for a 9.8 kw system on a shed roof in North Wales?

Used to it's full capacity that system is only going to provide 42 amps max at 230 volts is it worth the outlay given that you'll still pay for what you use over and above that. Have I missed something in the info here?

Is the shed an 'ordinary' one within the curtilage (garden boundary) of a dwelling? If so then you can probably get away with permitted development, assuming you can meet all the other conditions and that permitted development rights haven't been removed from your property.

If it is any sort of commercial 'shed' then you will need planning permission.

Yes unfortunately it is a commercial shed. Which is used for feed housing, and agricultural vehicles. Great planning to consider! How much hassle will this be?

If it is commercial then you potentially also need to get your head around other issues like: VAT (input and output tax), capital allowances (incl AIA and WDA) and corporation tax. 10kW systems can have an excellent payback and ROI though.

Bruce

I was led to belive if i did not run the system through buisness then I would not have to pay tax on earnings? As i will be using above 50% of the energy produced.
