hi all , just been on a course with olic and doing alot on testing , the tutor told us the best test would set us back about £600 , but with limited knowleage of testing i don't wont to spend all that money , Would a multimeter tester (kewtech in the swrewfit book page 311) £62.29 + vat do the job , only need it to test in my own house while learning
thanks lee

not really mate. i havent looked at the tester you are asking about, but for that money it wont have the required functions to properly carry out installation testing. to carry oput testing you need the following instruments or a meter that has all of these built in

Low ohms continuity tester
Insulation resistance tester
Loop tester (prefarebly with prospective fault current measurement built in)
RCD tester

Hope this helps.

PS these testers are expensive, but you get what you pay for.

You are better off saving up until you can get a proper tester. I know its not the same as actually doing the test yourself but if you buy Practical to inspection and testing by C Kitcher ISBN 978 0 7506 8449 1 that has plenty of photographs in it so you can visualize how its done. buying that tester you mention would just be a waster of money.

I doubt it very very very much, as the first amendment to the 17th is not out until about July next year, and seeing as the 16th ran for well over a decade I can't see the 18th rearing it's head until at least 2023.

Don't believe everything you hear people!! ;)

all he said he was told by niceic that they are revising it now and will be out within the year , more training and more money for you sparks

Why would the NICEIC be revising it? It's the IEE/T who publish it, although they may have some NICEIC people help draft it.

You're being told about the first amendment, that's all....

Firstly let me say I am NOT an electrician ( not by trade anyway )
I picked up a Megger CM500 from a well known online auction site for 170 quid.
Add to that the price of a calibration and its not too bad...
Instrument works a treat and the paperwork for cal. stated no adjustments reqired. So would have been fine even without the cal.

no i said he was told by NICEIC THAT THEY WAS REVISING IT (meaning the IEE)

No need to shout darling, you didn't make that quite clear in the original post.

Even so, the 18th edition won't be coming out this decade, so you are still be told incorrect information...

In the first amendment there will be a new section on medical locations (section 710), surge protection (in part 4 I think), and a complete overhaul of periodic inspections, which will now be called EICR (electrical installation condition report).

There will be no need for more training, or books as the amendments are free. Just read the amendment and put the knowledge in your head.

Simples.
