Well dont be shy, post any questions you are unsure about I'm sure somebody will be able to help & advise:).

No earth at a switch? (lighting I assume)
The earth may be supplied via metal conduit hence no visible earth cable or the installation is 1960(i think) era with no earth on lighting circuits.
In the event of no cpc you could always install one for the circuit or re-wire the circuit in T/E.
Or change all fittings to class 2 fittings, replace all metal plate screws for nylon type note at cu " no class 1 items to be used on lighting circuit" :D

ok thanks yer i meant a light switch what does the earth actually do then?
wt would happen if there werent an earth in a switch?

The earth does what it say's on the can, it is the circuit protective conductor (cpc).
At a light switch you may find a single conductor (T/E switch drop) terminated to the metal back box, so giving a fault path from the plate screws - back box - cpc - back to cu - on to suppliers earth.
Or
The switch back box may be used as a JB so you will have all cpc's terminated into one terminal block .

Hope that sort of makes sense
