Just seen an advert for new series of cowboy builders, looks like they have a new sponsor 'checkatrade - who are in there words "the uk's answer to rogue trader problems". Had a look and it seems a bit my hammer/rated people and a bit of a Di grazing ground at moment, but when show goes out there site will start taking some big hits from general public - might be worth a punt if price is right, the check's they do seem quite stringant to.

Just a thought.

Regards Alex

So by implication, if you're not a Checkatrade "member" you're a rogue/cowboy?
Well that's just what we all need isn't it

All i'm thinking trev is there maybe some work to be had by a sudden influx of enquiries to there site - if the price is right, they have a definate shortage of sparks in my area not sure about where you are.

Yeah I agree with you about the work stream possibilities but that bald guy and her that used to get em out will be pushing this as some sort of reference.

think IQ is registered with checatrade!! ask him how he gets along with it!!??

think i will stick to my council scheme!!!

Checkatrade is a very good concept and has kept true to it's original strict criteria of membership. The checks and references (bank, trade, insurance, scheme provider, qualifications etc.) that they carried out on us were more stringent than NICEIC or CHAS, they even visit your premises!

They gave us a free 1-year membership based on the fact that they were mainly active in the South but wanted to push up into the North.
They said that they were planning national advertising to supplement the radio advertising that they were using down South and sure enough, starting this month, they are sponsoring a few TV shows and getting some good press attention too.

Checkatrade is not a lead creation website like RatedPeople, Myhammer etc. there is no charge when a customer decides to call you, it is basically a tightly controlled vetting and rating system, allowing customers to see exactly what you have in terms of memberships, insurances, skills and feedback.

No, you're a rogue/cowboy if the customer has a decent sob story. I can't watch this tosh any more. It's cringeworthy - every supposedly 'factual' tv programme is turning into an X-Factor clone. I don't watch that either.

I cringe when I hear the 'so we paid him thirty grand up front and he never came back' seriously, are people so stupid??

I cringe when they say how much they paid, knowing that they will have gone with cheapest price and not bothering to check the builders history and then giving a massive deposit.

Saw one on the last series where the "builder" was a Chinese woman in her 50s

People had handed money over only to find out she wasn't a builder at all and used illegal immigrants to carry out work

What a surprise eh? How stupid do you have to be ?
