Installed a system the other day and ended up having a long ''conversation'' with the other quoter for this job , he lost out mainly on price with him not being vat registered and the fact that he's only installed one system on his own house versus our several hundred very happy customers
he's actually wired this house which is why he has access to the site
This ''Electrician'' was really out to try and make me and the company I sub for look bad before he even saw any of our work, to the customer, by criticising the design (14 Sanyo's on 3000 Hf this has worked very well for lots of our customers) and the fact that we were facing huge Dc losses by having a 22 mtr run from the roof to inverter which is in a workshop which is nice and cool , apparently this is not good for inverters and I was an idiot for using 4mm cable 12 mtr ac run (4mm oversized somewhat but nothing bad there ) instead of the 2.5 mm 19mtr cable he'd put in for us in the loft complete with tears and kinks galore .
and also the fact that our work on the slate roof was bound to leak and wouldn't be covered by any guarantees , (his assumption ,every job we do has Reiga etc
and the roof fixings are slated and flashed correctly by a meticulous roofer who was born on a slate)
Then out of the blue he promises not to tamper with anything we've done , I took this as he probably will do, luckily the customer is on our side and realises this is a case of sour grapes
Our electrical work on this job is immaculate far better than anything this chap could do judging by the state of his install , one of the poorest I've seen
ie cables aren't clipped along joists just hanging like spaghetti twisted together ,alarm and telecoms run together for 11mtrs and cable tied to AC cables down to outlets
Its a TT and there was no Rcd protection or Kmf installed before the tails run 12 mtrs through joists and along internal walls to the Cu until I mentioned it to him with which he looked blank, and I had to explain. the list was endless just very poor workmanship throughout.
The apprentice took his camera round taking pics for the local college, they have a board to show trainees how not to do things ,but with 22 new pictures they might need to increase the size of it, I noticed around 28 different things I would never do, it reminded me of a job I saw being done by locals in Tunisia a few years ago.
I've sealed every item even the isolators have seal labels over the screw holes and one on the ESS switch , every inch of the job has been photographed to show how we left it just in case he starts messing around, customer knows and is going to let it slip .
I'm going back on monday just to set up the sunnybeam for the customer and I'm looking forward to telling this guy that I'm taking the Niceic chap there for the annual visit on wednesday this week, this electrician has a board outside declaring his membership of the Niceic and there's no way the standard of work won't be seen by the inspector and I fail to see that he can ignore it , if he does I'll cancel my membership
The sad thing is that this chap had a good opportunity to see a Pv job done by a more experienced firm, ask questions etc which we'd be more than happy to do as we have nothing to hide and learn something useful you aren't told on a course, something I'd have loved to have had 2 1/2 years ago
ps He had a grant which paid for his 7 day MCS / C&G PV course as he lives in the right postcode on the Welsh border
