I normally stick to domestic wiring, but I have enquiry from a customer who has added stables in their back garden. I think I should treat this as a special location i.e. agricultural. When I referred to the 17th edition its says no to TNCS systems. That puts me in a spot of difficulty as the customer wants to extend their domestic wiring to the stables. To make the conversation a little more difficult, they already have the old stables wired of the same supply, (new stable block has been built and the old stable block is going to be changed into a bungalow).

Do you think stables in a domestic property should be viewed as special location?

from what i remember from college ,animals are more at risk of a fatal shock from electricity so disconnection times will be 0.2 seconds,so yes the stables is a special location

more than that, there are rules for tt involving agriculture etc.

if i remember right a load of horses died because of an earth rods so they restrict where they can be used

In the incident at Newbury, the horses that died had steel shoes, the ones that survived had aluminium ones, the aluminium oxide film on the shoes is an insulator...

BS7671 define agricultural and horticultural (705) as somewhere livestock is kept, plants are grown or anywhere food or animal products are managed.
I think stables would be incensed at referring to livestock in relation to them but the storage of animal feeds may get them into the definition.

well technically there livestock because people do eat horse, just in this country there reguarded as pets

Livestock is defined as 'domestic animals, that are kept or traded as a source of income'. Some definitions include horses in that. Another one of those poor designation used by BS7671. In my mind, a horse stands on four legs, just like sheep or cows, has the same likelihood of death from electric shock AND also worth a lot of money. Think BS7671 includes them in its definition of livestock!

The Regulations do prohibit the use of TN-C-S/PME where there is livestock being kept.
Installations where TN-C-S/PME is prohibited are those where the fabric of the premises which contains the electrical installation is subject to change or of a temporary nature.
Caravan sites, construction sites, horticultural and a vast majority of agricultural installations generally have no livestock present.

Step gradients do have to be considered where livestock are present, however with TT installations, they would only be present in the event of a fault.
Protective measures and the nature of the load will have limit the duration and severity of any step gradients.

If people wish to consider stables for private use as agricultural I guess they will also consider vets, kennels pet shops, etc as being agricultural?
