Special locations petrol stations

Hi all i was just wondering if anyone knew if petrol stations were all on a tt earth system as i went to look at a couple in towns today and both said at the eart met bar tt sytem also at the main cut out fuses although did not look like an overhead system and in densely populated towns. I was just wondering if it was because of the special location and the need for rcd protection on each individual circuit that a tn-c-s or t-n-s sytem would not be permittable? Any ideas

If you intend to work on a petrol forecourt you will need a "petrol passport" in order to do so.

Would that apply to work in the shop and no outside supplies

i think it only applies to forecourt work.

No. Only outside on the forecourt and surrounding areas, There are "zones" within that area but inside the buildings are NOT in any zone. Its all to do with where fumes are likely to be....

Flamability and that i know you need special insurance and tickets to work on gear like that. I was just wondering if there was any stipulation on the earthing system on the intake at such a premesis

HS(G)41 Petrol Filling Stations - Construction and Operation

Paragraph 174 of HS(G)41 states that the electrical supply to a petrol filling station should not be by means of a system in which the neutral and protective conductors are combined (i.e. a TN-C-S system) or protective multiple earthing. One of the reasons behind this is that it could lead to imposition on the petrol filling station systems of uncontrollable currents to earthed metalwork form the supply system external to the petrol filling station. These currents could lead to incendive sparking.
The question has been raised with the Health and Safety Executive that if protective multiple earthing is prohibited on all new stations, what is the situation regarding old stations where it is fitted?
The matter was therefore discussed at a recent meeting of the electrical committee of the HS(G)41 working group. In view of the fact that it was not possible to put a safe value on the current flowing to earth, because it could vary due to conditions not under the control of the site operator, their advice was as follows:-
i) a maximum period of 3 years be allowed for it to be removed;

ii) in the interim period at annual inspections, the current flowing down to forecourt equipment should be measured and recorded in the documents at the time tested;

iii) in the situation where other areas of safety are to be changed, in these cases the Licensing Authority may use its discretion to extend this time to coincide with these other changes.
