Bought a new Freesat 55" Samsung TV and couldn't watch strictly tonight due to a noticeable speech sync/sound issue on HD. Any ideas what causes this, have updated firmware etc and issue seemed to go away once Michael McKintyre got on?

Apparently its a known problem with the built in freeview channels something to do with the freeview tuner being affected by a software update but mostly on standard definition channels. Updating to the latest firmware like you've done should fix the lip sync problem.

Do you have any other audio kit your playing the sound through?

No was playing through the TV only, seems to be okay today? A fairly new TV so all a bit new to me, will phone them up tomorrow as ITV player seems to be knackered, probably not up and running yet as I think this is a fairly new model.

As Lee says, a firmware update might rectify the problem. The Sony tv I bought a year ago, has had over 5 updates for various bugs, your Samsung probably has had a few as well. The update is something you can do yourself. By default most firmware updates are set to manual. In any case your tv, should be updated to the latest version. Have a look through the avforum list of Samsung TV's for yours, or Google it to check yours.

From way back ... there were many makes and models affected this way. Sound has a fairly straight path to the viewer but the digital pic goes through quite a bit of processing before display. This can lead to a sync issue with the sound leading the vision by, say 100ms. There were magic boxes that accessed the digital sound and user could programme the box to restore alignment. Nowadays this will hopefully be ironed out in the TV as one of the firmware updates spoken of.

I've used one of these to solve the problems, but I haven't needed it with recent screens :)
