Recently I have visited two property's that have a strange wiring layout. They are both old pre 1960's wiring.
The sockets are wired thus:

A heavy cable about 6mm2 is run to each room and terminated in a junction box, from this junction box multiple spurs are run to each socket outlet in 2.5mm2

I am just wondering if this was ever accepted practice?

Hi Wotsit. Do you mean that it's a radial to the jb then a ring around the room? Or is it all radial?

Oops sorry, yes you said all radials.

I was told at college that ring final circuits came in during the last war in a bid to reduce the amount of cable/metal/conductor, on the grounds that e.g. a 2.5mm ring can carry much more than a 2.5mm radial, evn though you need as great length of the smaller csa conductor.

Maybe the wiring is a lot older than you think ... ???

The rubber stuff was phased out in the 60's. Needs replacing.

Quiet common this spider leg style in old properties, seen it a few times.

You might find the lightings done the same, one feed to an old joint box then one wire to each light/switch.
