I am a solar installer and i have been told that i can use a mc4 splitter to connect 1 string in to both connections on inverter as they had done this before to spread the load surly this can not be right.

as a splitter is used for 2 strings going in to 1 not the other way around

This guy said the dc voltage was too high for a single string so they split with a splitter the wrong way round in the loft instead of going on the roof.

Voltage in to splitter = voltage out. You have been advised by an idiot. Unless I've understood this wrong, in which case I'm an idiot.

nah, the solution to that is to either choose an inverter that can take it (fronius IG3.6 for example) or use 2 strings and then put it through a splitter
unless I'm also an idiot

isnt that the same as parelleling the inputs up? read the same thing on another thread about stecca inverters?....unless im also an idiot

Whats the point, the splitter is designed to combine 2 parallel strings into 1 to reduce cabling from the roof where the inverter can handle the additional current. By splitting the other way, makes no sense as the inverter will only combine the 2 back to 1 anyway.

It will not alter the voltage............

REMEMBER connect in SERIES and watch the voltage go up, connect in PARALLEL and watch the current go up, so by adding the splitter all you get is parallel paths back to the inverter sharing the current, all you will do is use more cable and maybe save on volt drop............
