If you find a fault on a ring and decide to split it, how do you guys decide where the middle of the ring is, or do you just split it anywhere that you think is central? Are there any tests that can be done to find the central point?

I just want to see what the general consensus is?

Cheers
Mark

you're splitting into 2 radials because of a fault

so do you not have to split where the faulty section is then?

or do you mean the ring isn't wired correctly?

When splitting a ring due to trying to find a fault i dont generally worry about finding the middle of the ring, i am trying to find the faulty part. so i just split and test. and keep doing this until i find the fault. More times than not the ring will be split in many places by me to i find the fault, so finding the middle is not important.

I think you were right davelerave, Basically once u find the faulty cable, remove the damaged cable and stick both legs of the old ring on separate 20a breakers (as long as one of the legs wasn't the damaged part obviously)

Obviously it would be best to split centrally with an equal number of sockets on each new radial. Unfortunately it all depends on the faulty leg and where she is. As the lads have said, if there is no other way of rectifying then 20A radials is all we can do.

As lenny and the other guys, depending on the fault you could do the R1 R2 lest where you cross the legs , then take continuity readings at each socket when you find the higest reading you have found the center point of the ring , R1 R2, live of leg A to cpc of leg B and leg B live to cpc of leg A

Correction: Ignore that last bit, I got confused. The OCPD will still trip in time at the sum of the currents.

Seen this where T&E has been fixed with a flat bend of too tight a radius.
