There are two flats in a converted terraced house and at present there is one CU for both flats. I am rewiring the upstairs flat and then disconnecting/blanking of the original wiring. I plan to leave the downstairs wiring as is but remark up etc.

Upstairs I have calculated as 16mm T/E feed, its a one bed flat. 9kw shower, elec cooker, Immersion two rings plus OP storage heaters x 3. The new meter position will be in the hallway downstairs so I will have to run a new sub main via fused isolator to new CU upstairs. Not sure which is the best option for the OP fed tho. I could put in a timeclock/contactor arrangement and split the feed upstairs, or I could get a 5 wire meter fitted and run a second phase in 16mm singles. That way I won't have to install timer and contactor. What do think is the best option? Also where I blank off the original feeds to lights/sockets, there was only one lighting circuit and ring, do I need to put warning notices that there are live cables behind?! Ideally I would have preffered to rewire both as completely independant units but that is not an option!

Hi Dunx

Speaking as a meter installation engineer, you would be better off asking your supplier to fit a 5 terminal meter rather than messing about with a contactor and time switch. Just make sure you have your meter tails ready and identified for normal and O/P supplies or fit 2 x 100amp isolating switches berfore meter engineer arrives or he will just walk away and not fit the new meter.

Meterman
