Hi

I have a single external socket in my kitchen that I want to remove. It's a spur from the upstairs ring. To find where it is connected to the ring would involve removing half of the false ceiling or the floor boards in the bedroom above.

My question is, is it permissable/safe to terminate the cable in some way, and then push this up into the void between the false and real ceilings?

Or, could anyone give me any advice on the correct way to do this? Or do I have to resort to finding where it is wired into the ring?

Thank you.

Is this your house ?

In all honesty the best way to remove something is indeed to remove it, that is the crux of the word remove, what you want to do it just move it.

IMO I do not like metres of LIVE cable coiled up into a false ceiling, terminated into whatever it is terminated into . If it is really that difficult to gain access to remove it completely, I would isolated the upstairs ring so the cable is dead, making sure it is dead, and then cut it back and terminate it into a fixed box on a wall or a joist. I would then attach a label onto a blank plate for future reference.

Remember though if you use conventional connectors to terminate it you need to have access to the box for future testing or maintenance.

You're correct of course, I should have said something like 'terminating a live cable' I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and find out where it connects to the ring then... I just hoped there would be an easier way of doing it in such a confined and difficult to access area!

Thank you very much for the advice. Oh, it's my girlfriends house...

It's just the cable, in some trunking... which is passed through a hole in the false ceiling. That's why I don't know where it is spurred from...
