Im changeing alot of fluroscent bulbs! and starters at work and sometimes the stater turn a nice purple electric colour which looks pretty dangerous. Can anyone tell me why this is?

if you mean when its fluttering...or doing its job .....they have a bi-metallic strip within them that helps to strike across the tube......they also have a capacitor within them...

It's normal and nothing to worry about. It's just the gas in the starter's neon bulb ionising attempting to strike the fluorescent tube.
