Starting out as an electrician

My name is Stephen and Im from the Dovecot area of Liverpool. I am currently doing my A Levels in Law, Business, English and Citezenship but I have decided on taking a different career path. I want to be an electrician but I dont know how where to start. I was wondering if someone could shed some light on what I have to do, what colleges would be best, and any tests I have to do. I heard about apprenticeships but I dont know anywhere that does Electrics.
