Hi there,

Im 19yr old and have always been interested in electrical equipment and been very hands on from a young age taking bikes apart, computer etc. This is what lead me to taking a BTEC Diploma at my local college in electrical engineering. Now im finishing ive realized its more to do with the small components like circuit-board etc and i don't know whether i could see my future being there. I also completed a small unit installing a consumer unit, a basic ring and radial circuit which i thoroughly enjoyed. Therefore i have concluded that it was the electrician work in dwellings which was my real forte. Especially solar pv which has been an interest from covering it on my course.

There is the background anyway and now you know where im at considering my basic knowledge of electrical installation. :dizzy2:

Before starting the HND in electrical engineering that i have applied for i would really like to properly consider training as an electrician instead. I have a real passion an drive for it so im rearing to go for it but the training and money is holding me back slightly. The problem with this is because ive earned my first level 3 qualification i wouldn't be able to train for the NVQ and have it funded now. SO i have to find what i will have to get as qualifications.

There is a course that i have been looking at through trade skills 4 u that look highly professional, efficient, reliable and all the rest with rave reviews from what i can see.
This is the package i have been looking at that from an untrained eye looks to be the bare minimum you can obtain: Solar Panel Installer - Solar PV Training

Obviously between solar jobs i would be looking to obtain i would look to be the complete package and offer installations to dwelling etc where i have a builder that would already offer me work on all his builds through the work i already do part time which is roofing. (helpful with the pv installs).
SO would this package enable me to be qualified to install a full system within a new build etc, to sign it off and be the sole installer.

Even if this course would be suitable is there other training i MUST have or would highly recommend as i would not like to cut corners, ive always been an honest trader and would not offer anything less.

This post is all probably alot of waffling but ive tried to put it as accurate as possible. Thanks for reading through and would be VERY grateful for some pointers on the matter.

No this is just a course that i had found whereas they combine all of the required knowledge into one package and price. Otherwise i would need to find all the courses i needed compare prices etc which is what im actually asking here.... what courses i need to take in order to be qualified and know what im doing.

In what respect?

After reading my first post i forgot to mention the following..
I have read thoroughly for months now on installations regarding the solar pv and talked to an electrician that worked at the same building as me a few weeks back that these are basic compared to you wiring throughout a house. However i would like to build on this with household install aswell in which he recommended working alongside a contractor who would use the basic knowledge from this course and put it into practice within a real situation. After all he said i would likely to be working a circuit on a wooden board in a warehouse. Far from what is needed to lay wires round a property etc. I would probably have to do this for free for a long while as i don't have an adequate set of skills yet and getting an apprenticeship at my age is not going to be difficult.

All of which im willing to do as its what im probably going to be doing the rest of my life.
Im just a bit confused as to all the courses etc there are on offer and the amount of information im needing to take in.

why would you pay a fortune to be so called qualified by one of these providers, then go out and work for free for experience, once you work for free ÂŁ1 ph is a wage...its a concept i struggle to understand..

Because in my situation i would struggle to gather these qualifications or the experience without making a sacrifice. What i mean to say is i am basically following the electrician taking note of what is happening and putting it into practice. All of which i am learning.

An example is when i got a job as a general laborer throughout a summer holiday with a local roofing firm. From there my work effic impressed and so did the ability to take on the technique to the job. 2 years in and i have my own van and complete jobs for myself for the company with my own laborer. However i don't have any qualification to stand on if i wanted to move company's. Totally different to say electricity or gas whereas you need to be much more trained and aware of the work that your are undertaking.

Please also dont ask why not just do the roofing. Its a vile trade. But pays me well now im high up in the firm. Wouldnt get this at mcdonalds put it that way ;)

You may ask why i didnt just do the course from leaving school but the parents saw it as my easy way out. Even though its what i want to do. And now ive got this to deal with. A mess which will probably leave me in a dead end job because i dont enjoy it.

I'm not sure where you would start. You have a OND in electrical engineering. Therefore if you are currently looking at a option to continue your education upto HND level offering yourself cheaply to gain experience as a sparky would be a good idea . I would not necessarily look at paying for the solar PV yet. The money your paid for that could be used to pay for the NVQ level 3 of which you already have the academic qualifications. If you are in with a sparky or contracting company you could then build your portfolio and become a qualified sparky. A lot of the skills you get then will be transferrable to the soalar industry
