Hi I am looking to start out on my own as a spark which i have 5 years (experiance/apprenticeship) under my belt but doing everything i can to become a good self employed sparky.

I don't have my part p as i didn't know much about it untill i did my 17th ed but as i am out of work and near broke at the min i cant afford it

the question is,
I want to start out small on my own doing minor work to get some cash to help towards my part p etc
doing (dommestic/commercial) to get the feel of it if you know what i mean and not taking on anything to big at first untill i have the confidence with the business side

would this be a good way of starting out as the business side of things are a bit alien to me and would there be anything most important to starting out that i should know?

Thank you in advance for your replys and i hope i made some sence

u are gonna have to join a scheme to become part p compliant or u will pay through the nose doing it under LABC to do any form of minor works.
First off, i would contact the tax office and try and get on a free course to firstly explain the basics of working for urself, tax, benefits, what u are entitled to etc.

Its a hard decision to make, and quite a big outlay, ie do u hav a tester of ur own, all the tools etc, van, liability insurance. If not u can do it two ways in my eyes.

Gradually buy the tools over time etc until ur initial set up cost is minimal, or bite the bullet and approach the bank for a business loan with a business plan on what u want to achieve against what business is potentially out there. IT is hard, and finding a customer base does not happen over night.

Times are hard at the mo, but work is still out there, however it is getting more and more cut-throat every day. Just look before u leap really, and if u have a lil lady luck on ur side, u plan ahead u wont look bak.

there are alot of courses available to u aswel as alot of local grants to help u start up if u are unemployed at the mo too

Hope that helps a bit?!

maybe don't necessarily confine yourself to domestic/commercial all sorts of activities need electricity. My JIB card says Highways Electrician and I also do other bits not normally seen by the general sparky

thanks for the reply, i came accross this site a week ago and seing so many different things that i need to consider, do i need to other things to work on street furniture as such eg some form of certificate after training etc?

register as self employed pay your ni (now to be paid quarterly i believe instead of monthly) get 2m public liability and set yourself away, providing you initially avoid any work that requires notification then you are doing no harm, sooner or later partp registration will become inevitable but its only a yearly payment of ÂŁ400 so not major, dss can help or put you in touch with startup organisations who will pay for some things such as partp membership, test equip 17th etc... i know this as i re-registerd business last year and got new megger 1553, pat tester and payment for napit renewal from them.
