Hi I gave just finished a full apprenticeship lasting just under 4 years. I was recently made redundant and have decided to start up my own company as I have many resources and help from family at hand. I was just looking for some advice on Which association to join. I have looked at both Napit and Niceic. Napit is looking the better option for me I currently don't have 17th edition as I was trained to 17th but qualified to 16th edition. I have heard Niceic can be particularly hard to obtain without much experience beyond an apprenticeship like my situation. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi, i have been with with NAPIT since the Part P scam started, and never had any problems with them. I think they are cheaper than NIC but for some reasons you still get companies saying you need to be NIC approved before you can work for them although to be fair that is getting less and less now. One thing i have noticed lately is that you can never get through to their tech line straight away any more. They have taken on all B&Q support/tech help and more than likely only got the same amount of staff! I rang a coiple of weeks ago and had to wait about 2hrs for then to ring me back after leaving a message

It all depends on where you are going to look for work. If you dont want domestic then you do not need to join a Part P scheme as it only applies to Domestic work. If you go into commercial and/or Industrial then you will work to Electricity at Work Regs and the Health and Safety at work act amongst others.

Cheers.........Howard

Thanks for the help. The main of my work will be domestic I should think so the part p is something I am looking to comply to. Has anyone had experience in joining Niceic fresh out of an apprenticeship?

I am looking at possibly elecsa (which are ok if you just want it for notifying) but if you want council and/or contracts with bigger organisations then its still the NIC i`m afraid and dont they know it n all.........

This is what I feared. I think Niceic will be hard for me to get right now so early out of an apprenticeship but Napit may be a good starting point to build on? How well known are elecsa I had not heard of them before? Are they of a similar stature to Napit?

If you are looking for registration with ease of acceptance, then the niceic domestic installer route is probably the one to take

You do not have the entry criteria that Napit publish, although, take with a pinch of salt any criteria by any scheme, because they slip in the 12 month "get it if you can" clause

An assessment and promise you will do the necessary in 12 months and importantly the "fee" and they will all bend over backwards for that fee and let you in

Elecsa are the domestic installer arm of the ECA...a VERY well respected organisation synergy.

You should speak to Elecsa, Napit and NICEIC and see what each of them says to you.

Each orgainsation has its pro's and con's and you may well feel more comfortable with anyone of them. Napit ask for the 2391 but also offer the Napit N2391 which I'm told is nothing like the "proper" 2391

I'm with Elecsa and I've always felt that they put their members first and the technical help guys are excellent.

Yes Glen, its an in house testing course and exam for qualified electricians who dont have 2391 (or so its said)

What we have to commend is that they ask or provide a testing qualification at all
Even if the na 2391 was a load of cobblers,at the very least its an extra requirement that cant be said of the Niceic who have even dropped the 2391 for Qs from their approved scheme, that is very regrettable

As I stated, his simplest and easiest entry route with minimum qualifications iss Niceic domestic installer

i know its all about competency but it seems a bit desperate of some of these scheme providers: almost like their bending the rules (legaly) just to get folk onto their schemes. The way i look at it is this: If you take money for services offered then you should be up to a minimum requirement. Surely the C&G 2391 demonstrates this?
