I’ve pretty much done the same as ‘widdler’ suggested. I sub-contract to large companies on a labour only basis during the week, and my own work in the evenings and weekends. Ok, it’s a bit of a rush-round sometimes trying to juggle things about, but it seems to work. I think I’ve spent something in the region of £7-8k, but that includes van, access equipment, tools, test equipment, scheme fees, etc.

Oh, and no profit yet!

Don't bother with yellow pages, shop around for your public liability ( I just paid £80 for £5M for this year)

There's £500 I've saved you already :) Seriously though, it depends on which part of the country you're in. Unless you have the contacts you'll be fighting over jobs with others willing to work for nothing or customers wanting to install everything and have you "just connect it up". If I hadn't already put so much money into mine I'd be looking elsewhere but most of us on here are past the point of no return I think!

If you do set up I'd reckon you'll be looking £7k to get a basic start up going.

How old are you mate. If your between 18 and 30 you can get business start up help from the princes trust. I've done it and it's highly recommended. Pm me for more details
