I’ve pretty much done the same as ‘widdler’ suggested. I sub-contract to large companies on a labour only basis during the week, and my own work in the evenings and weekends. Ok, it’s a bit of a rush-round sometimes trying to juggle things about, but it seems to work. I think I’ve spent something in the region of £7-8k, but that includes van, access equipment, tools, test equipment, scheme fees, etc.

Seriously though, it depends on which part of the country you're in. Unless you have the contacts you'll be fighting over jobs with others willing to work for nothing or customers wanting to install everything and have you "just connect it up". If I hadn't already put so much money into mine I'd be looking elsewhere but most of us on here are past the point of no return I think!
