I was told years ago I was going to loose my Job so I started retraining with one of those home learning courses. Now despite the place going bankrupt and having to finish my training elsewhere I have nearly finished the course.

I have my EAL Domestic installer (part P), 17th edition regs and 2392-10. Now I finish with my company next week and intend to move to Blackpool (My Sister's Hotel) and work for myself doing electrics.

Now I looked at the domestic installer scheme's and decided to wait till I got experience by doing hotels. Hotels not being covered by part P would mean they are none notifiable.

I ask about this on the course and although not very sure about hotels the guy there said until I get 2391 and also get on a competent person scheme I can't sign of any of my work, unless I go through LABC to sign of against my work.

Now I know I need a scheme or LABC for part P Domestic work but can anyone tell me where I stand for none part P work and if I need 2391 or is he just trying to sell me another course (which i suspect).

Thanks mik

I admire your courage. Blackpool has loads of guest houses etc etc as you know. Before you start to dismiss not requiring Part P self cert scheme, have a good luck at the premises you will be working in, if they share a supply with any part of the building which is domestic, then it will come under the remit of part P. i.e a guesthouse where the owner lives in. search the web and download Approved Document P, and have a read of it.
just re read your post, part p will apply to Hotels as well if it shares a supply with a live in owner etc.
You dont need any quals to complete an Electrical installation Cert, but you do need to be able to test in order to complete it properly, you dont need 2391 either, but 2381:2008 is usually the minimum to join a Part P scheme

from what i see the biggest thing you lack is experience but if your going to work in a commercial property you will be dealing with 3 phase so its not something you can wing

if you're moving to blackpool, you'll find plenty of work in the old small hotels. my mate's got a hotel on south shore. look into fire alarms. there have been a few fires, and loads of the old hotels need L2 fire alarm systems.

Thanks for the help guys. I've got my 2382 so I can sign off my work then.
Got a different teacher on Friday (last day of my 2392-10) and they got asked all this by a few people who were worried about what first bloke had said. He confirmed what you said so that's great.

Been reading part P to look at hotels and couldn't find anything but found explanations (on-line) and a post elsewhere on these forums saying that hotels are not part p. This is due to dwellings having less than 6 residents and works like a hall of residence or old folks home. Seems that the definition of dwellings that puts hotels out of part P is in Part B (fire Safety), which goes along with what telectrix said about L2 fire alarms.

Thanks for the help :)

HERE IS ANOTHER POSSIBLE EARNER for you. some years ago, before the Gestapo enforced the smoking ban, all the hotels were advised to fit heat rise detectors in all rooms. now they want them all replacing with smoke detectors.
