Seen quite a few jobs advertised across uk for street lighting electrician. I ve done all kinds of work before domestic, commercial, light industrial and have done carpark street lighting before. Just wondering if anyone new of any extra skills you need for this role. Wondering if i could just blag it with what ive done before.
Cheers

Can you come round and do the one at the back of my house by the garage? Been out for ages, and I'm fed up of unsavoury characters wondering just what may be in an electrician's garage....

I've done loads of street lighting for a couple of different councils......all had different rules and regs they wanted you to abide by.

Some would stipulate 10mm3c, some were happy with 2c. Most were happy with either Tofco or Lucy cut-outs, some wanted a rod at EVERY column, some just at the end of branch.

Basically the method is the same....just down to how they like it done.

This was my first try at one. Originally the job was to re-lamp the fitting and soon discovered why it was not working.

I am at the training stage in my career and was not happy with renewing the metal clad skt (not sure if this is acceptable or not didn`t see right to me so i replaced it with the cut out).

iv done a fair bit of street lighting before and as lenny said before its down to the contractor as to what is actually required but they are all more or less the same:

1st. you mount the cut out about halfway up the wooden board to give you space to terminate the armour making sure the cover fits back on

2nd. then you terminate the armour into the bottom end of the cut out (the black and red thing in jboys pic) and connect the flex into the top of the cut it which is your load side and close it up ( basically like a fused DP )

3rd. depending on the fitting the you either connect the flex into the control gear at the bottom of the pole above the cut out or at the top inside the fitting its self

4th. take a supply from the control gear to the fitting if its separate and its job done
